EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES:
Updated for Spring 2008
Each nine weeks, you will have the opportunity to earn up to 10 extra points on your nine weeks grade.  Listed below are some extra credit project possibilities; if you have others, see me with your ideas. Include in your proposal the extra credit project(s) you  will do, a brief description and point value for each.  

One Point Grade Projects:  

1. Create an English Language Etymology (history of a word) Scrapbook. Make a scrapbook page  for each of 10 chosen words. Each page should creatively show researched  origins of each word and changes in meaning, spelling, or pronunciation;  show how each word has become what it is today. 
2.Create a Poster Ad or Book cover for one of the works studied in British  Literature or American Literature. Be sure to include major themes, settings, or characters,  illustrations, and blurbs about the author.
3. For each college scholarship you apply for, I will grant you one extra credit point.  You must turn it in to guidance and make a copy to turn in to me as well for credit.  Go by and ask our guidance counselors and use the
CFNC site as well. 
4.  For each 1000 grains of rice earned through www.freerice.com, you will earn one point. You must print off your proof.  (2 limit))

Two Point Grade Projects:

1. Create a Poem Photo Album: choose a poem studied in class and visually  represent the poem in a Photo Album. Take pictures of images which are  suggested by the poem and arrange them along with the lines of poem.
2. Create an audio taped reading of a poem. Analyze a poem from British  Literature for sound and sense, and tape an oral reading of the poem itself,  revealing your understanding of the poem's content through your performance  of it; feel free to compliment your reading with appropriate music. 
3. Create a travel map for Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.  This must be in thorough detail and describe each of the pilgrims as well.
4. This I Believe is an exciting national project that invites people to write about the core beliefs that guide their daily lives. National Public Radio airs these personal statements from listeners each Monday on Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Mrs. Van Geons has some examples from her class on her web site.  If you write one, turn it in one copy to me and email one copy to NPR, I will grant you two points.

7.  Watch either The Two Towers or The Return of the King (sequels to The Fellowship of the Ring) and write a movie review (synopsis and your detailed opinion of the film) for either one.


Three Point Grade Projects

1. Write a letter (minimum of three pages) to your English teacher/professor for next year (Dear  __________)  introducing yourself, your strengths and known  areas for improvement, your expectations and your concerns for the upcoming course in a manner that expresses your command of the English Language (Be  creative, concise, and convincing that you are aware of your own resources,  plan accordingly, and evaluate your performance for areas that can be  improved). Discuss (briefly) your semester in British Literature as well as your favorite literary time period(s), author/poet(s) or literary work.  Yes, use evidence to support your assertions.  Yes, use your favorite quotes  and explain the reason for their being so.
2.Video Tape: Have a Point/Counterpoint discussion on video of a  particular poem (British Lit) in which one person presents his/her views and  the other counters with his/her opposing views on a particular poem. Feel  free to debate the poet's style (meter, rhyme, sound devices), or content,  but the other person must have an opposing view. Both should support with evidence from the work being discussed. FOR TWO PEOPLE. 
3.Write and perform music for one of the poems (sonnet or a shorter ode  would be most feasible). Perform your song with the lyrics of the poem on  audio tape; be sure to consider  the tone of the poem and compliment it with appropriate music.


Four-Five Point Grade Projects:  (depending on quality of work
)
1.Video tape dramatization (15 minute minimum) of a poem or piece of British lit.  (if doing a play, be sure to narrow down to a significant scene). Include  acting, costume, staging, etc. MAY WORK AS A GROUP OF UP TO FOUR PERSONS
2. Build a replica of Shakespeare's Globe Theater, after having researched  it.
